A 3D version of how dental implant works

Dental Implant Restorations

Dental implants are increasing in popularity as a permanent solution to replace missing teeth. An implant is inserted into the bone and acts as a “tooth root.” This implant gradually fuses with the bone overtime and can further support crowns, bridges, or dentures.

Dental implant restorations can involve a single tooth or multiple teeth. There are several different types of implant restorations, but all are done to replace a missing tooth (or teeth). Your dentist will work with you to find the best type suited to your specific case. The common types of implant restorations available are single implant crown, a dental implant bridge, implant denture, and implant hybrid prosthesis.

  • 1. Single Implant Crowns

This procedure is ideal for those missing a single tooth. If a tooth is missing due to trauma, infection, or never came through, an implant can be placed in the area. A crown will be used to replace the missing tooth and can be treated just like a natural tooth. A single implant crown is a non-removable solution to restoring a missing tooth.

  • 2. Dental Implant Bridges

Dental implant bridges are done to replace a row of missing teeth. Also known as an implant-supported bridge, your dentist will place two or more implants on either side of the empty space. Once the implants have integrated, a bridge will be placed over them, filling the gaps with custom-made esthetic and functional teeth. This form of implant restoration is a non-removable solution to restore your missing teeth.

  • 3. Implant Dentures

Full dentures are ideal for patients who have no teeth in a given arch. Between two and six implants are placed in the mouth to secure the dentures in place. Implant-retained dentures offer better retention than conventional dentures. They keep the false teeth securely in their place, increasing wearability, confidence, and ease. Implant dentures are a removable option for replacing missing teeth.

  • 4. Implant Hybrid Prosthesis

Like the implant dentures above, an implant hybrid prosthesis replaces a full arch of missing teeth. However, this type of restoration offers better chewing ability and esthetics than implant dentures and is a non-removable solution for replacing missing teeth.

How Do Implant Restorations Work?

Implant restorations are a great solution to missing teeth. The use of a dental implant(s) can replace a single tooth to a full arch of missing teeth and can be tailored to suit each individual’s need. Here’s how your dentist will complete your implant restoration:

  1. An implant is inserted into bone.
  2. The implant is given time to fuse with the bone. This part of the process takes between 3 to 6 months.
  3. Your dentist will take impressions (or molds) of your teeth/implant(s) to produce your new restoration.

I recently switched to Dr Low’s dental practice and I’m so happy that I did. I came to his clinic with some specific work that needed redoing and a lot of dental anxiety. I can honestly say that I haven’t felt this comfortable in a dentist chair for a very long time. Dr Low obviously cares a great deal about his patients and the quality of the work that he does. He is gentle, attentive and thorough, and I am very happy with the care I've received. Really, everyone at the clinic has been great. Super helpful, supportive and informative. As an added bonus the actual cost of the work ended up being less than the estimate. Plus their COVID protocol includes HEPA air filtration. As a person with higher risk family members, this aspect is very important to me. I feel confident entrusting my future dental care to Dr. Low and his awesome team!

I took my 8 year old son to Dr. Lows a couple of weeks ago. Dr. Low was kind, patient and very gentle. Brenda, the Hygienist, and my son had a great time during his cleaning and she was so wonderful with him. He even showed me some new brushing techniques. Huge raves to Dr. Low Family Dentistry.
